Our practice was designed from the ground up to allow our physicians and staff to accommodate the unexpected, the last minute, the urgent and the emergent — all while sticking to our normal schedule of preventive appointments. Our patients lead busy lives and literally can’t afford to be kept waiting. Our practice has specialized in this kind of care longer than anyone in the nation.
And then there’s this…
The whole point of strictly limiting the doctor/patient ratio at The Sheldon Sowell Center for Health is to have more time to dedicate to each patient. It works out to about 13 hours per patient per year. What do we do with all that time? Here are a few things:
- We review and summarize your past medical records. A clear, easily read chart could save your life — no exaggeration.
- We consult with specialists on your behalf and write letters of introduction to each specialist you see, with a copy to you.
- We research the latest in prevention and disease management.
- We devote time to diagnosis. It’s an art, it’s a science, and it takes time to get it right.
- We research your condition by reviewing the literature, some of which is accessible only by subscription.
- We maintain our Insider’s Network of specialists by interviewing physicians and other healthcare providers regularly.
- We develop our own software — something that’s outsourced at most doctors’ offices, with decidedly mixed results.
- We investigate the latest medical technology. Devices and protocols we have looked at recently include the BpTRU (an improved blood pressure monitoring system), devices for testing hearing, and screening tests for signs of early dementia.
- We work on our patients’ annual health reports, each of which takes some 6-10 hours to prepare.
- We’re available: available for your calls, your emails, your unexpected visits and your emergencies. In fact, we’re staffed to be able to handle two full-on medical calamities at once. It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen.
